THE BIG CHEESE 5K

9:30 a.m.

The Big Cheese 5K –  Running for Food & Fun.

The Fun part is obvious – It’s River Rat weekend, of course, and costumes are not only permissible they are encouraged –

but we also plan to do our part to help fight hunger in our own community by bolstering the fundraising efforts of the Athol Orange Food-a-Thon and the Franklin County Meals on Wheels program by donating all our proceeds to those organizations. Last year we donated $2,700 to the Food-a-Thon with the help of the Athol Lion's Club.

The Food-a-Thon is held annually on the 2nd Tuesday in April.

Last year the communities raised over $33,000 to benefit the local food pantries.

The Big Cheese 5K kicks the annual River Rat Parade off at 9:30 a.m. sharp.

It’s a full 3.1 mile course that starts on School Street where the road meets Cottage St.

Runners will travel the parade route passing several event sponsors and turning right on Canal Street and will follow a scenic route out around Fish Park and Silver Lake Park. The home stretch is be a low grade down hill sprint to the finish line just in front of the Athol Town Hall. Finishers will be able to pick up water and cool off in the Library parking lot, behind Town Hall, before heading inside for results and prizes.
